Radical Residency VIII

A 4 week residency with 10 artists at Unit 1 Gallery/Workshop

Fracturing the Facade 2024

A four week residency culminating in a large scale installation. The work evolved from research into facade and fakery. Never believe what you see. Using the tropes used in black and white films and TV programmes from childhood and combining the links our brains make to “fill in the gaps” I built an installation that playfully engages with a world of make believe. Thrown into the mix is Gainsborough. Thought of as quintessential British landscape painter, Gainsborough made models of the landscape in his studio, using brocolli to stand in for oak trees.

The final piece, works as a theatrical structure. The Brocolli Boy looks longingly at the images of Brocolli men, perhaps imagining that he himself will be a Brocolli Man. The back of the structure acts as a holding space for props, invoking the idea of backstage and allowing for the suggestion of further incarnations.

The piece is displayed on a steel structure mounted on wheels and implies its temporality in its ease to be rolled up and wheeled away.
